It also gives people a reason to be choosy about systems they colonize rather than just colonizing everything in sight. It is there to make different strategies viable. In this game, it basically just means that tall empires can more easily use the buildings that depend on happiness and if you go very wide and have to use the religious law of forcing content then you literally cannot use the buildings based on happiness (which are very powerful buildings.) However, this should still be offset by the sheer number of systems you can have at your disposal bringing in science and money. When the further reaches of your empire are several months, if not years travel, from your capital it could be a logistical nightmare to manage and maintain control of. It was very difficult to manage such a large empire from the seat of power. There has to be a downside to going wide or that becomes the only viable strategy. The advantage of going wide is obvious, more systems means more FIDS. Maybe there's a way to do this by having a colony colonizing a system you don't want forever and have a fleet stationed there so that if it ever becomes a case someone else tries to out-colony you in that system, they'll never be able to finish it unless they remove your fleets(assuming your colony finished all its progress and only needs kei to become a system).Like Satoru said, penalties for going wide aren't new to 4x. That way, you only need to worry about the riftborn trying to colonize systems outside of your influence, as Riftborn don't need food to survive a blockade. I think the best situation here is for you to put the effort into making military ships to stand guard on those systems for as long as you see fit. My problem is Lumeris and RIftborn keep to retaking their systems after I wreck them, And to keep the war momentum I have to push forward on them and I can't sit and wait 20 turns untill all population and system improvements die off, and Lumeris just keep buying systems that I didn't chose to keep for myself. It would make the gameplay less irritating and war more dramatic. And also conqered systems have to have a timer untill they can be recolonized, maybe something like ten turns, because they are war ravaged. There must be a way to invade and just destoy all on the planets, so you don't have to sit in the system and wait, because othervise someone else will take it right behind you. But I suppose it's how it should work, and I have to drop weaker colonies in favour of more prosperous systems, but my problem is Lumeris and RIftborn keep to retaking their systems after I wreck them, And to keep the war momentum I have to push forward on them and I can't sit and wait 20 turns untill all population and system improvements die off, and Lumeris just keep buying systems that I didn't chose to keep for myself. I have 10 colonys now and I have -40% FIDSI on them. And I've managed to do quite well untill all my conquered systems started to lose population and then I noticed that even though Hissho doesn't have "traditional" penalties for overcolonisation but they lose -5% FIDSI for each colony above their colony limit, wich is only two, and I haven't find a way to raise it. So I've been playing ES 2 as Hissho recently.
